Tacita Dean writes in Base Matter & Uncommon Solvent (2024) that
“When you preseve something, you kill it”
This is something we need to think long and hard about when we come upon buildings in dire need of care.
To preserve them, is to just hold them is stasis - they were created to function - they need to continue to be given the gift of functionality and it is our role as their caregivers - to consider and provide for that future.
