A place of Connection
In The Eyes of the Skin, architectural theorist Juhani Pallasmaa examines how architecture is experienced through the body and its sensory engagement with space. He writes:
‘My body is truly the navel of the world, not in the sense of the viewing point of central perspective, but as the very locus of reference, memory, imagination and integration.’(Pallasmaa, 2012, p. 12)
Recurring themes that reflect and reinforce this duality have always been present across my architectural and photographic practice. Collected together here as themes, they begin to form a scaffolding for exploring the human connection to built fabric. Each provides a point of orientation through which ideas, relationships and questions continue to emerge over time, creating an evolving structure for future observations, thoughts and connections.
This is a place of collection while those relationships continue to evolve.

At the beginning, all is unfamiliar.
We are at sea, wary and unsure, looking for the lighthouse.
As we begin to pay attention — the rarest and purest form of generosity — questions form, and we follow their threads. We learn to tolerate uncertainty and not yet knowing where everything will lead. We wait until those relationships unexpectedly connect.
Perhaps belonging begins here: through the generosity of attention, curiosity and a willingness to remain with the unknown while connections are allowed, and encouraged, to form.
